Craigievar Castle is a harled castle or fortified country house 6 miles (9.7 km) south of Alford, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. It was the seat of Clan Sempill, and the Forbes family resided here for 350 years until 1963, when the property was sold to the National Trust for Scotland by the 19th Lord Sempill. [1]

Built by the Mortimers of Craigievar between c 1575–95, Craigievar Castle in its original form would have looked a little different: rather than the iconic turrets, the uppermost level of the castle was likely much plainer and less soaring in height.

Craigievar Castle is to many the quintessential Scottish tower house, and is certainly one of the most striking in appearance with bold pink harling, although this is not the original colouring. Inside, the castle is equally striking, with intricate plaster ceilings dating from the 17th century.

Craigievar Castle is a six-storey L-plan Tower House renowned for being one of the finest original examples of Scottish Baronial architecture; it is listed category A. It was begun by the Mortimers and completed in 1626 by William Forbes who is thought to have used John Bell as mason.

Scotland has many castles, but there is something truly unique about Craigievar. It is widely recognised as one of the best preserved and most authentic tower houses in Scotland. This recognition started early.
