The Cray-3 was a vector supercomputer, Seymour Cray's designated successor to the Cray-2. The system was one of the first major applications of gallium arsenide (GaAs) semiconductors in computing, using hundreds of custom built ICs packed into a 1 cubic foot (0.028 m 3 ) CPU .

The Cray-3 had introduced a new square-root instruction not previously available in the Cray-2 or Cray-1, and the hardware produced the wrong result for one out of every 64k operands. Once discovered, CCC provided a temporary fix in the compiler (i.e. don’t use the new square-root hardware) and provided a fix to the hardware three months later.

Graywolf was a two-octant Cray-3 and had four processors, 128 megawords (1 gigabyte) of memory, 20 gigabytes of disk space, and a clock speed of 2.08 nanoseconds (480 MHz) — the fastest clock speed of any supercomputer then available. It was connected via HIPPI to NCAR's Mass Storage System.

Dec 31, 2014 · The Cray-3 supercomputer was the last complete system produced by Seymour Cray's Cray Computer corporation (work was started on a Cray-4, but Seymour died in a car accident, and the company folded shortly thereafter). This is the sales brochure for the computer. Only one machine was delivered (as a demonstration unit) to an outside customer.
