Late on June 3, the storm was classified as Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Gonu, upon which it became the most intense cyclone on record in the Arabian Sea. Gonu strengthened further to attain peak 1-min sustained winds of 260 km/h and gusts to 315 km/h while located about 285 km east–southeast of Masirah Island on the coast of Oman.
