The third named cyclone of the 2010 cyclone season, Phet developed in the Arabian Sea on May 31 to the west of India. With conducive environmental conditions, the storm intensified to reach peak sustained winds of 155 km/h (95 mph) on June 2, based on analysis by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

Tropical Cyclone Phet brought not just strong winds but also heavy rains to the Arabian Sea, the Arabian Peninsula, and the coast of Pakistan in late May and early June 2010. Increased westerly wind stress during a negative IOD phase led to widespread upwelling and an intensification of oceanographic currents (eddies and jets) in the western part of the Arabian Sea (Fig. 9).
