If you go straight to 2 you'll miss out on the first half of the story, but you could easily catch up through a video or something. Also if you play 1 first then want to go straight to 2 you might be bored of Xenoverse by then since their quite similar.

Man I used to watch one DBZ episode a week so I didn't know anything but loved the show. The games originally taught me the basics of the story. I played every DBZ game on release starting from Budokai 1 up to Tenkaichi 3 without ever properly watching the show. The games really made me a hardcore fan down the line.
