DECtape, originally called Microtape, is a magnetic tape data storage medium used with many Digital Equipment Corporation computers, including the PDP-6, PDP-8, LINC-8, PDP-9, PDP-10, PDP-11, PDP-12, and the PDP-15. On DEC's 32-bit systems, VAX/VMS support for it was implemented but did not become an official part of the product lineup.

The TU56 DECtape Drive is a dual transport reel to reel tape drive. The DECtape drive served the purpose of a floppy disk drive on modern machines. Even though it was tape it was formatted into fixed size block and could randomly read and write them like the sectors on a floppy.

DECtape was a low-cost, low-capacity tape magnetic storage system intended for storage of small data entities (e.g. programs). It used 3/4-inch wide magnetic tape on small 4-inch reels, formatted before use into fixed-sized blocks which could be individually read or written.

The TU 56 DECtape had a very fast tape transportation speed for reads and writes of 81-105 inches per second, and an average rotation speed of the reels of 500 rpm. A driver to use tu56 with the PiDP-11 and PiDP-8 are included. Hardware requirements. This TU 56 simulator has been tested on the PiDP-11 and PiDP-8 using a Raspberry Pi 4B.
