The Aircraft Manufacturing Company (Airco) DH9A was a single-engine light bomber designed and used towards the end of World War 1. It was designed around the US built 400hp Liberty 12 engine, to improve the performance of its underpowered predecessor, the Airco DH9 (which is described separately on this website).

The de Havilland DH9A, known as the ‘Ninak’, was developed as a medium bomber. It was produced in 1918 and saw limited service in World War One before going on to form the backbone of the Royal Air Force’s post-war colonial bombing force. In marked contrast with its predecessor, the DH9, the DH9A gained an enviable reputation for reliability.

Airco DH9 (G-EAQM) was the first single-engine aircraft to fly the full distance from England to Australia, leaving Hounslow on 8 th January 1920, and landing at Port Darwin on 2 nd August 1920. Piloted by Lt Ray 'Battling Ray' Parer, this aircraft is now preserved at the Australian National War Memorial, Canberra, Australia.

When it is airborne, this very rare survivor will be the only original 1st World War bomber flying in the world – and incredibly rare event.
