2008年6月9日 · Joel, I use Minwax Wipe On Poly on most everything these days. Goes on easy and hopefully protects the wood for a long time. I find the Minwax Wipe On works great when real fresh but starts to dry up as soon as the can is opened. When you notice it get thicker (and darker in color) - just add a little mineral spirits and you'll be good to go.

2008年8月29日 · Mostly what is meant in DIY usage is a varnish made using an alkyd resin modified with a bit of polyurethane resin ie. it is a uralkyd resin. This is very much like more conventional varnishes based around alkyd resin or phenolic resin (bakelite plastic) which are reacted with an oil, often linseed oil, but also tung oil or soya oil.

On a test spot, I applied (wiped) homemade wipe-on poly (50/50 oil poly and mineral spirits) and discovered it was removing the stain. I assume the mineral spirits is the reason but (having not yet tried this) assume wiping poly alone might, as well.

2016年6月8日 · The most I have ever tried is about 7 layers of wipe-on Poly (Clear gloss minwax Poly cut by 1/2 with Paint Thinner). Then I hand sand very lightly with 1200 between coats. Some of my best results have been after waiting for full dry (30 days) and then polishing with Beall's White Diamond and Carnuba wax, Renaissance Wax, or Black Bison Wax.

2016年12月24日 · The down side to putting a film finish over the tung oil (which is a drying oil and will cure) is that it will be more visible when the inevitable damage occurs and water gets under it. And "wipe on poly" isn't as moisture resistant as many folks think. Only encasing the wood in resin will (usually) keep water out of it. IMHO, of course. --

2006年10月24日 · Hi. I posed this question to the turner's forum but was advised I'd be better off asking you seasoned experts on the subject. I made a walnut wedding platter which I plan to send out to get laser engraved. The platter is sanded to 400 grit. I was planning to use high gloss wipe on poly as a finish, but several people said not to use poly on walnut.
