Less selective mining affects the feed to the jig plant, as is also the case with feeding the DMS plant. Because of the size of the open pit (12 km χ 2.5 km), the feed to the plant is trucked from different loading points in the mine with ore types that differ mineralogically, resulting in variation in the chemical composition of the feed.

Sishen is one of the largest open pit mines in the world – some 14km long. The jig plant at Sishen mine is the largest of its type in the world. Sishen operation includes: 13 active open pits, 24 waste rock dumps including stockpiles, 4 tailings’ facilities, beneficiation plant and other infrastructure. Kumba plans to extend life-of-mine to 2044.
Dense medium separation (DMS) is a robust process that can be conducted at particle sizes as coarse as 300 mm and as fine as 500 μm with high separation efficiency, depending on liberation characteristics of the value minerals. The DMS process involves three steps: feed preparation, dense medium separation, and ferrous-based media recovery.
