Die Dampflokomotiven der Baureihe 05 waren für überdurchschnittlich hohe Reisegeschwindigkeiten vorgesehene Schnellzuglokomotiven der Deutschen Reichsbahn. Die Einzelstücke – drei Lokomotiven in zwei verschiedenen Grundbauformen – entsprachen weitgehend dem Konzept der Einheitsdampflokomotive .

The Deutsche Reichsbahn's Class 05 was a German class of three express passenger steam locomotives of 4-6-4 wheel arrangement in the Whyte notation, or 2 ′ C2 ′ h3 in the UIC notation used in continental Europe. They were part of the DRG's standard locomotive (Einheitslokomotive) series.

Die Dampflok BR 05 002 stellte 1936 einen Weltrekord mit einer Geschwindigkeit von 200,4 km/h auf und blieb damit die schnellste Dampflok deutschlands. Die Dampflok BR 05 gehört zur Bauart 2'C 2' h3.

Op 11 mei 1936 bereikte de 05.002 tussen Hamburg en Berlijn en wel precies tussen Friesack und Vietznitz met een trein van 197 ton bestaande uit drie personenwagons en een meetwagon een snelheid van 200,4 km/uur. De locomotief leverde daarbij voor een korte tijd een arbeidsvermogen van meer dan 3400 PKi.
