The DUKW (GMC type nomenclature, colloquially known as Duck) is a six-wheel-drive amphibious modification of the -ton CCKW trucks used by the U.S. military during World War II and the Korean War.

DUKW, 2.5-ton six-wheel amphibious truck used in World War II by the U.S. Army and Marine Corps. Its primary purpose was to ferry ammunition, supplies, and equipment from supply ships in transport areas offshore to supply dumps and fighting units at the beach.

The hull was rectangular, with a curved bow, sloped ends and a flat bottom. The bow and stern shapes were determined by the angles of approach and departure. Around 1/3 of the vehicle was occupied by the engine, a 270 cu in (4,425 cc) GMC straight-six engine giving 64 hp (47.74 kW) and a lot of torque.

Many DUKWS have more reliable diesel engines and supplementary bilge pumps plus the obligatory safety equipment. Restoration projects are really dependant on the state of the hull – with very few hulls not needing either major repair or total replacement. This can cost up to £15,000 for a professional replacement.
