Situated in central Jiangsu Province, the Dafeng National Nature Reserve for Elks covers 78,000 hectares of wetland. It is known as the "hometown of elks in China". In 2002 it is listed on the category of world's important wetlands.

The park contains Wuhu Lake and surrounding wetlands, which provide habitat for 153 plant species and 97 animal species, including protected species such as elk and red-crowned cranes.

A typical intertidal mudflat ecosystem on the coastline of the Yellow Sea, supporting a wide variety of rare animal species, including 315 species of birds (23 of them nationally protected), 600 of insects and 156 of fish, as well as the threatened Pere David’s Deer or “Milu” (Elaphurus davidianus) for which the Reserve was chiefly gazetted.
