Dalbergia is a large genus of small to medium-size trees, shrubs and lianas in the pea family, Fabaceae, subfamily Faboideae. It was recently assigned to the informal monophyletic Dalbergia clade (or tribe): the Dalbergieae .

Genus Size: Approximately 270 to 300 species. Mechanical Characteristics: Density of commercial species range from medium-high (D. tucurensis) to very high (D. melanoxylon and D. cearensis). Visual Characteristics: Heartwood tends to be dark reddish brown colored, sometimes with darker contrasting streaks. With sharply demarcated yellowish sapwood.

Dalbergia sissoo is a rosewood species from India and Bangladesh, usually known as sheesham or North-Indian rosewood. Its timber is extremely dense and has mild rot resistance but is porous, and its exterior is soft and susceptible to wood-boring insects. It is used for making cabinets and flooring, and for carving.
