He's absurd, hilarious, weird as hell, creepy, surprisingly interesting, and generally a fun as hell character to read about in the story. At that point the twist is that Nagito ISN'T actually Makoto (sort of similar to how the twist with Togami in SDR2 is that he isn't actually Togami from DR1).
