A dark purple bruise is typically a sign that the injury is fresh and the blood vessels underneath the skin have been damaged. As the bruise heals, it will typically change colors, progressing from purple to blue, then green, and finally yellow before fading away completely.

Senile purpura is characterised by irregularly-shaped macules, 1 – 4 cm in diameter, that are dark purple with well-defined margins. The lesions do not undergo the colour changes of a bruise and take up to three weeks to resolve.
