The RL01 and RL02 are single platter, removable pack disk drives, introduced in 1976 and 1978 respectively, by DEC. They used an IBM 5440 type pack, as used on the IBM System/3 . Up to 4 drives may be attached to a single controller ; the drives are connected serially.

RL01 and RL02 drives are moving head magnetic disk drives manufactured by Digital Equipment Corporation for the PDP-8 and PDP-11 microcomputers. The RL01 and RL02 drives stored approximate 5MB and 10MB respectively, utilizing a removable data cartridge.

RL02 Disk Drive. The RL02 drive uses removable disk packs to provide 10MB of storage; twice as much as its predecessor, the RL01. In order to insert or change the cartridge the drive must be powered up and the top cover opened. Rack-mounted drives are therefore fixed to rails which allow the drive to slide out easily.

The RL02 diskdrive can be modified to accept RL01K disks (read-only!). There are three internal connections that must be moved. They are located on the R/W board, the logic board and the DC Servo/PSU board. See "RL01/RL02 DRIVE/PACK COMPATIBILITY" for more information.

The RL02 was used with many DEC PDP-11 and VAX computer systems. It is a rack-mountable hard disk drive with a single, removable, 14" platter, and a capacity of 10 megabytes. The platter is formatted with 512 cylinders, and 40 sectors per track.

The RL02 hard drive was a mainstay of DEC's packaged computer systems in the late 1970s and 1980s. Storing 10MB of data, these drives featured removable platters, 55ms average seek times, and ~250KBps effective linear throughput.

Complete port of the RL-emulator to a SoC/HPS environment based on the DE10-Nano board, primarily consisting of a CYCLON V FPGA with integrated ARM Cortex-A9 CPU. With the new software and firmware version V2.8E, the DE10-Nano Board works as an RL disk emulator (slave mode), RL disk reader / cloner / writer (master mode).
