The DEFA 553 is a gas-operated five-chamber revolver cannon using pyrotechnic cocking and electrical ignition. It fires a range of 30 mm ammunition of various types, and is capable of continuous fire or 0.5-second or 1-second bursts. The 553 was superseded by the DEFA 554, which incorporates a number of detail improvements.

The DEFA 554 introduced a selectable rate of fire. The DEFA 550 series fires the 30x113mmB round from a single belt. These rounds proved effective in the air to air and in the air to ground role. Their large diameter allows for more HE filler, but also induces more drag than smaller caliber projectiles.

The DEFA 554 cannon reportedly carries a reliability rating of 15,000 mean rounds between failures. The pilot can also select an alternate firing rate of 1,100 rounds per minute.

553 cannons has a life of 5000 rounds. The DEFA 554 has the same basic features as the earlier models. However, it is longer at 2.01 m and weighs 80 kg. It uses the same ammunition as the 552A and 553 but has two rates of fire achieved electronically. They are, 1800 rds/min for the air-to-air role and 1100 rds/min for the air-to-surface role.
