dig (domain information groper) is a flexible tool for interrogating DNS name servers. It performs DNS lookups and displays the answers that are returned from the name server(s) that were queried. Most DNS administrators use dig to troubleshoot DNS problems

By default the dig command queries port 53 which is the standard DNS port, however we can optionally specify an alternate port if required. This may be useful if an external name server is configured to use a non standard port for some reason.
