There is an alternative to Digitrax and NCE which I expect will be available next year - TCS already has a wifi UWT-100 throttle out and the smaller brother UWT-50 is expected in about a month or so. TCS is working on a Command Station which is currently in beta testing.

I have just purchased some Digitrax new DH165AO Decoders and they now have built in resistors for the forward & reverse headlights, but you have to use resistors for the other functions F1-F4 to me a great step in the right direction with less resistors to fit.
