Dioscorea alata – also called ube (/ ˈ uː b ɛ,-b eɪ /), ubi, purple yam, or greater yam, among many other names – is a species of yam (a tuber). The tubers are usually a vivid violet-purple to bright lavender in color (hence the common name), but some range in color from cream to plain white.

Dioscorea alata, commonly known as water yam or winged yam, is a fast-growing, twining, tuberous-rooted, herbaceous perennial vine of the yam family (Dioscoreaeae). It produces a large root crop of edible subterranean tubers (yams) which are an important starchy food source in many tropical to sub-tropical areas around the globe.

It is a climbing tuberous geophyte and grows primarily in the wet tropical biome. It is used as animal food, a poison and a medicine, has environmental uses and social uses and for food.
