Dirk Willems (Dutch pronunciation: [ˈdɪr (ə)k ˈʋɪləms]; also spelled Durk Willems; died 16 May 1569) was a Dutch Anabaptist martyr most famous for escaping from prison but then turning back to rescue his pursuer – who had fallen through thin ice while chasing Willems – only to be recaptured, tortured, and killed for his beliefs.

Dirk Willems, Asperen, 1569. No story of an Anabaptist martyr has captured the imagination more than the tale of Dirk Willems. Dirk was caught, tried and convicted as an Anabaptist in those later years of harsh Spanish rule under the Duke of Alva in The Netherlands.

Dirk Willems is probably the most famous of all Anabaptist martyrs, since he was caught only because he stopped to save his captor from drowning. This noble act of love cost him his life.

Dirk Antony Williams (born 31 March 1961) is a New Zealand-born Australian former rugby union player. Born in Tauranga, Williams was educated at Mount Maunganui College, where he had four years in the 1st XV. He was a New Zealand Schools and New Zealand U-21s representative. [1]
