In the campaign I'm currently running (my first since the mid 90s!) my players have stumbled upon a network of underground tunnels, created by a (custom) creature known as a firebug, which is a large creature resembling a ball of sentient lava. It's native to the elemental plane of fire but on the prime material plane for unknown reasons.
