This is the difference in angle between one shaft and the next. For example, the output shaft to the driveshaft, or the driveshaft to the pinion shaft. Most driveline companies recommend operating angles of 3° or less for maximum u-joint life. There should be a minimum of ½° to allow the needles to rotate.

1. Drive Pinion or Bevel Pinion. The drive pinion is otherwise called the bevel pinion. It is assembled with a differential housing which is referred as differential case. The driver shaft is connected or associated with the drive pinion by a universal joint and it attracts in with a ring gear.

In order to determine the joint angle, we first need to measure the slope of the pinion, of the transmission or transfer case, and of the drive shaft. The differences are the net joint angles. For example, if your drive shaft is 20 degrees and your transfer case is 5 degrees down, your joint angle is 15 degrees.

When swapping in a different axle, or lifting your truck, you have to make sure you set it up with the proper pinion angle. The pinion angle is simply the angle between the rear end’s pinion shaft and a true horizontal line. The transmission angle is the angle between the transmission’s tail shaft and a true horizontal line.
