The Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR) was a government science agency in New Zealand, founded in 1926 and broken into Crown Research Institutes in 1992.

Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, abbreviated DSIR was the name of several British Empire organisations founded after the 1923 Imperial Conference to foster intra-Empire trade and development.

Crown Research Institutes are the science research businesses owned by the Crown (i.e. the New Zealand Government) in New Zealand. They were formed in 1992 from existing government-owned research bodies, the largest of which was the DSIR (Department of Scientific & Industrial Research) established in 1926.

In 1928 the DSIR joined with the Department of Agriculture in establishing a Plant Research Station. It soon produced some important research results, especially on pasture plants. Some vigorous and persistent strains were selected, and seed of certified purity produced.
