The Duchy of Spoleto (Latin: Ducatus Spolitanorum) was a Lombard territory founded about 570 in central Italy by the Lombard dux Faroald. Its capital was the city of Spoleto. The Lombard Kingdom of Italy comprising the Duchy.

The Duke of Spoleto was the ruler of Spoleto and most of central Italy outside the Papal States during the Early and High Middle Ages (c. 500 – 1300). The first dukes were appointed by the Lombard king, but they were independent in practice.

In 883 Guido II reunited the dukedom, henceforth as the Duchy of Spoleto and Camerino. After the death of Charles the Fat in 888, Guido had himself crowned Roman Emperor and King of Italy by Pope Stephen V (891).

Spoleto has a fairly obscure history. It shared three of its rulers with the Lombard kingdom and, as such, was tied more closely to the kingdom than was its rival duchy, the more important Benevento, which bordered it to the south. Its territory took in the southern half of the modern region of Marche and most of Abruzzo.

2018年10月4日 · Amazingly, Suppo would not be the last Duke of Spoleto to die of illness in 824. According to the Royal Frankish Annals, the duchy first passed to Adalhard the Younger. He got off to a great start, ruling for around five months, but he eventually died of a fever and Spoleto, once again, needed another duke.
