EMD E-units were a line of passenger train streamliner diesel locomotives built by the General Motors Electro-Motive Division (EMD) and its predecessor the Electro-Motive Corporation (EMC). Final assembly for all E-units was in La Grange, Illinois .

2001年9月9日 · The E-units are a six axle locomotive, while the F-units were four axle units. The E-8/9 shared nose and cab details with the F units, but not many other details were similar. They were both produced at the same time.

EMD's E Unit: The Streamlined Bulldog . In June of 1937, the Baltimore and Ohio became one of the first railroads to place the EMD E unit passenger diesel in mainline service. This was to begin a love affair that railroads would have with the E for over 25 years.

Older model E-units from the mid-1930s, 40s and early 50s had been retired / scrapped or used as trade-in fodder for modern freight power. As the number of passenger train discontinuances increased, a few railroads elected to transfer road worthy E-units to freight service.

An Electronic Reversing Unit, better known as an E-Unit, is the device installed in AC style locomotives that allow the motors to be sequenced into forward, reverse, or neutral. Dallee E-Units have the option to start in either forward or neutral.

Conrail inherited its E unit fleet from the Penn Central and Erie Lackawanna. While the EL used its E's in midwestern freight service, Conrail quickly discontinued this practice and reduced it's E unit usage to commuter service in the east and executive service on the Office Car Special.
