The European Economic Community (EEC) was a regional organisation created by the Treaty of Rome of 1957, [note 1] aiming to foster economic integration among its member states. It was subsequently renamed the European Community (EC) upon becoming integrated into the first pillar of the newly formed European Union (EU) in 1993.

The European Union has been given a single legal personality under this Treaty. Previously, the European Community and the European Union had different statutes and did not operate the same decision-making rules. The Lisbon Treaty ended this dual system. On practical terms, all EU legislation has the reference to the EU since 1 December 2009.
