There is growing interest in using data captured in electronic health records (EHRs) for patient registries. Both EHRs and patient registries capture and use patient-level clinical information, but conceptually, they are designed for different purposes.

EHRs are, at their simplest, digital (computerized) versions of patients' paper charts. But EHRs, when fully up and running, are so much more than that. EHRs are real-time, patient-centered records. They make information available instantly, "whenever and wherever it is needed".

The electronic health record (EHR) is a more longitudinal collection of the electronic health information of individual patients or populations. The EMR, in contrast, is the patient record created by providers for specific encounters in hospitals and ambulatory environments and can serve as a data source for an EHR. [7] [8]
