Number 169 was built in June 1974 ( c/n 74611-30 ) as Amtrak 609, traded back to EMD as credit for F40PH locomotives. It was retained by EMD as a test bed for the then-new EMD 710 prime mover. It was sent to Colorado for high altitude testing of the 710.

Built in 1973/74, the SDP40F was in short a FP45 that incorporated Dash 2 technology, including the HT-C six-axle truck. On paper, the 3000-hp "F-unit" should have been a success.

A three thousand horsepower locomotive, based on the popular SD-40 was built new for Amtrak by EMD in 1973-74. Unfortunately these new locomotives were plagued by derailments most were traded in. Many parts were reused on the FP-40PHR.

EMD saved at least 4 of the units when they were taken in trade for F40PH's. Two have since been scrapped, and two are retained in Pueblo at TTCI and used as dynamic braking units to provide load for test locomotives. The two that remain EMD numbered 218 and 169, IIRC.
