The "GP40X" designation was also given to EMD 433A: a testbed built on a modified GP35 frame which was one of the earliest known diesels to be equipped or fitted with a 645-series engine, and served as a precursor to the GP40. The unit was eventually sold to the Illinois Central (IC) and became IC #3075.

EMD #433A (the locomotive didn't have an actual type name) was a 1960s experimental GP40 predecessor sometimes called a GP40X, unrelated to the later GP40X. It was eventually purchased by the Illinois Central and rebuilt into what was known as a GP45 or GP50X, but was just a GP40 with flared radiators.

Surprised they were still around in 1968. Still being used for testing, leasing? When were they sold to IC, UP, and GM&O? The first enrodes of what was to come. I remember seeing 434A,434B & 434C in SP freight service in the SF Bay Area and at Roseville. not as pleasant sounding as the SP Nathan P3s. Thanks for this unique posting.
