The EMD GP39 is a 4-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between June 1969 and July 1970. The GP39 was a derivative of the GP38 equipped with a turbocharged EMD 645E3 12- cylinder engine which generated 2,300 hp (1.72 MW).

The EMD GP39X is a 2,600 hp (1,940 kW) diesel-electric locomotive built by the General Motors Electro-Motive Division. All six units built were constructed for the Southern Railway with Southern's characteristic high short hood. They were updated by EMD at Norfolk Southern's (Southern's successor) request to EMD GP49 standards in 1982.

EMD offered revised variants of the GP38, GP39 and GP40 in the “Dash-2” series of road switchers from 1972 onwards. Basically nothing changed in the power train, so that the GP38-2 had a V16 without turbocharger with 2,000 hp , the GP39-2 a V12 with 2,300 hp and the GP40-2 a V16 with 3,000 hp .

The GP39X was an experimental locomotive that was designed to test 50 Series components. Six EMD-owned locomotives were built and in full SOU garb. These units were later converted to GP49 standards. Also, two GP39DC's were produced; the GP39 had an A.C. alternator as standard equipment, however Kennecott ordered two GP39's with D.C. generators.
