For the 50th anniversary of Electro-Motive in 1972, EMD built a B&O (Chessie System) GP40-2, painted it gold, and numbered it GM 50. Rail fan Frank Spieles was there to catch it while in Rughterford, NJ yard. The loco eventually became B&O 4164 and then CSX 6063.

Montana Western 31 at EMD 50th Anniversary Open House, La Grange, IL on September 9, 1972. A gas-electric car, she was completed on October 28, 1925 by the Electro-Motive Corporation of Cleveland, OH for Great Northern Railway as GN #2313 and now resides at the Mid-Continent Railway Museum.

Baltimore & Ohio GP40-2 No. GM50 was built in 1972 and was painted solid gold in honor of Electro-Motive's 50th Anniversary. Chicago & North Western No. 1518 was the first “GP” model locomotive produced. It is a GP-7 locomotive rated at 1,500 HP and was built in 1948 as EMD Demonstrator 922. Union Pacific SD40-2 No. 3157 was built in February 1972.

GM50: A one of a kind... If you saw an all gold locomotive you would think for sure you were dreaming. Well, Chessie had one. To celebrate General Motors 50th birthday in making locomotives, Chessie painted their second ever GP40-2 (and the second Chessie locomotive ever) as GM50 in all gold, one of a kind, paint job.
