Although EMD never actually offered a GP5 in their catalogue a handful were "built" on behalf of Great Northern. From what I found evidently the Great Northern had some FT units that they decided to have rebuilt into road switcher type units.

EMC participated in the construction of a number of motorized railcars, integrated streamliner trainsets, and experimental locomotives in the 1930s.

First, the underframe of the FT is not compatible to turn it into a GP. Second, reportedly the "GP5" had 16-567B engines, while the FT series did NOT have B series engines. To my mind there are lots of unanswered and/or unknown questions concerning this whole subject. The GN named them "GP5", which was their prerogative.
