The EMD SW1500 is a 1,500 hp (1,119 kW) diesel-electric switcher locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division from 1966 to 1974. [1] The SW1500 replaced the SW1200 in the EMD product line.

The SW1500, unveiled in the mid-1960s, introduced Electro-Motive's latest prime mover, the model 645. This engine replaced EMD's tried and proven 567, a power plant that vaulted the builder into first place in the locomotive market thanks to its rugged nature and easy maintenance.

The SW-1500s included EMD's 1500 horsepower 645E prime mover, an improvement over the earlier common 567 engine. The first flight of SW-1500s was numbered 2750-2760 and were assigned the class SWE-14.
