Conrail inherited 32 SDP45s from the Erie Lackawanna, reassigning their EL series 3635-3668 to CR 6667-6699. Built from May, 1969 through August, 1970 for the EL, EMD added a longer frame for concrete ballast aft of the radiators and a larger fuel tank for greater range. EMD's turbocharged V20 20-645-E3 prime mover produced 3,600hp.

Interestingly, KNR was the single largest buyer of any SDP model, including the 3000-hp SDP40 and the 20-cylinder, 3600-hp SDP45, both of which were driven by EMD's new 645 engine that had been introduced at the start of 1966.

2018年10月9日 · Two units have an interesting history and unique look. On 11 November 1973, EL 3657 and EL 3667 were involved in a severe wreck. The units were taken into the EL's Hornell shops. In 1974, they were rebuilt from parts supplied by EMD. EL 3667 received a new SD45-2 hood but remained an SDP45 underneath, including the fuel tank.
