This design became EMD's standard until the FRA mandated the wide "safety" cab on every new locomotive in the 1990s. Interestingly, the GP30 abandoned EMD's brief attempt at attributing horsepower rating to the model name.

Marketing literature claimed 30 distinct improvements from the GP20 and that this was the reason for the number. The GP30 successfully countered the GE threat and kept EMD in the dominant position in the North American diesel market.

Advertised by EMD as a combination “high speed and heavy drag” locomotive, the GP30 immediately took over from first generation diesels as premier mainline freight power. Although bumped to lesser service by more powerful engines later in life, many served over four decades, considerably longer than the expected service life of a diesel.
