EMDX GP22 7102, a one and only 710 series rebuild stands with a NS GP38-2 and GP60 after arriving on Macon to Atlanta manifest train 140. The trio stands gaurd awaiting their next assignments in Atlanta Ga.

With the introduction of the 7101 and 7102, EMD rolled out a line of low and medium 710-based repower options, complete with microprocessor controls and automatic start/stop option. The offering is basically EMD’s answer to the genset craze.

Outshopped as EMDX "Repower" Demonstrator GP22 #7102 (4/2008). Demonstrating on Canadian Pacific at Alyth, Calgary AB., in yard service (July/August 2008). Transferred to Port Coquitlam, B.C. (9/2008), for forwarding to Seattle, WA., to be barged to Alaska for testing on the Alaska Railroad.

Acording to EMD and Trains Magazine the unit is called a GP22ECO and was CP Rail GM/EMD/CP GP9U 1637 before its rebuild to EMDX 7102. a similar unit, also a GP22ECO has been rebuilt from a KCS ex PC GM/EMD GP40.

EMDX 7101 and EMDX 7102 both GP22ECO's. The 7102 has since been sold to Ferromex. KCS was the first customer for the GP22ECO/GP22ECO-M order its first units in 2009. There are currently 9 GP22ECO's on KCS's roster and 5 on KCSM's roster.
