The EMD GP20 is a 4-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors' Electro-Motive Division between November 1959 and April 1962. Power was provided by an EMD 16-567D2 16-cylinder turbocharged engine which generated 2,000 horsepower (1,500 kW).

2024年12月16日 · Electro-Motive's GP20 was the builder's first turbocharged model in the General Purpose series. Interestingly, it was inspired by Union Pacific's efforts to turbocharge the 567 prime mover. It was also the first road-switcher offered with a standard low nose/hood, designed to provide crews greater forward visibility.

2023年11月14日 · Electro-Motive Division’s GP20 was the company’s first four-axle model to be fitted with a turbocharger, but its roots trace back to one of EMD’s customers, Union Pacific. Union Pacific began experimenting with several turbocharger models in the mid-1950s on a number of its GP9 and GP9Bs, creating the first GP20s in-house.

2022年9月7日 · The EMD GP20 model was born out of the necessity by EMD to get greater horsepower out of a diesel locomotive. During the late 1950s, trains became heavier, schedules tighter, and there was a call for locomotives with more horsepower.

The GP20 is a four-axle road switcher with a turbocharged 567D2 engine, capable of producing 2000 horsepower. Two prominent features of the original GP20's are dynamic brakes and a low, short hood that tapers away from the front of the cab.

Created from the need for higher horsepower units, and to compete with ALCO and General Electric road switchers, the EMD GP20 was introduced in November of 1959. For the trackside observer, the GP20 represented a new generation in motive power - something new and different - a symbol of power and progress.
