
EMD GP38 - Wikipedia
The EMD GP38 [1] is a four-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between January 1966 and December 1971. The locomotive's prime mover was an EMD 645 16-cylinder engine that generated 2,000 horsepower (1.49 MW). The company built 706 GP38s for North American railroads. [2]

2024年12月17日 · The GP38 series is most easily distinguishable from other models by its twin exhaust stacks for its nonturbocharged 645E prime mover. In addition, it featured only two rear radiator cooling fans, instead of the three found on the more powerful GP40 series. However, identifying the GP38/GP38AC from the GP38-2 is a much more difficult undertaking.

8001, Class GP38-2, was built in August 1972, #7354-62, FN 7354-62, as PC 8001, Class EF-20. It became Conrail 8001, Class GP38-2, in April 1976. It went as EMDX 801 in July 1987. It went to UP as 1941, Class GP38-2, on June 27, 1997, and was renumbered 441 on November 16, 2000. It was retired on January 28, 2003, and became LLPX 2277.

426, Class GP38-2, was built in June 1972, #7354-33, FN 7354-33, as PC 7972, Class EF-20. It became Conrail 7972, Class GP38-2, in April 1976. It went to GM as EMDX 772 in July 1987. It went as UP 1926, Class GP38-2 on August 5, 1997, and renumbered 426 on April 3, 2001. It was retired on May 20, 2003, and became LLPX 2311.

EMD Leasing GP38-2 #791 (ex CR/PC #7991) working for the BN, presumably in the Seattle area. Print is dated "early 90s" but doesn't get more specific than that. This was one of one hundred GP38-2s which were taken back by EMD after their 15 year lease expired, much to the chagrin of Conrail! Photographer unknown.

2024年1月17日 · As in the GP38, the GP38-2 was a diesel-electric locomotive and used primarily in the freight-hauling role. The 250,000lb locomotive operated a B-B wheel configuration (AAR) standard and was powered by an EMD 16-645E 2-stroke diesel engine (with Roots-type blower) outputting 2,000 horsepower, giving the unit a maximum speed of 65 miles-per-hour.

EMD began production of the 16-cylinder, non-turbocharged, 2000 horsepower engine in 1972. Unlike the GP38’s engine, which drove a generator to supply power to the traction motors, the GP38-2s prime mover drove an alternator which produced AC electrical current that was rectified to DC to power the four traction motors.

Built between January 1966 and December 1971, Penn Central's 270 2,000hp 16 cylinder-powered units were assigned series 2010-2014 (CR reassigned to 7670-7674) and 7675-7939.
