The EMP 44 was a prototype, all-metal submachine gun produced by Erma Werke in 1943. It was rejected by the Heereswaffenamt. [1] The EMP 44 fires from an open bolt. The caliber is 9×19mm Parabellum. The length of the gun is 892–950 mm depending on stock position. The barrel length is either 250 or 308 mm long. [citation needed] .

ERMA began producing these weapons under the new designation of Erma Maschinenpistole, or EMP, in late 1931, and sold the first batch in 1932. Three major variants existed. The variant sold to Bulgaria and Yugoslavia had 30-centimeter barrels, tangent rear sights, and bayonet lugs.

The EMP-35, or Erma Maschinen Pistole 1935, sometimes simply referred to as the MP-35, was a blowback-operated submachine gun that was used by Germany during World War II. It fired the 9 x 19 mm Luger/Parabellum cartridge, and had a magazine capacity of 25 or 30 rounds.

At LCermont – Ferrand depot they finally assembled pretty impressive 3 250 EMP submachine guns, which were usually referred in French documents as Erma – Vollmer.

The EMP44 is the result of attempts from the years 1942/1943 to create a much simpler submachine gun as the introduced MP40. At this time German weapons were still made in high quality. Other nations, however, much more early on put their focus on quantity instead of quality.
