Epe is an Ijebu-Yoruba town and Local Government Area located next to the Lekki Lagoon in Lagos State. According to history, Uraka, a hunter from Ile-Ife, was the first settler of Epe. He left Ile-Ife with a group of hunters on a hunting expedition which led them to a place called ‘Poka’.

Epe, the fish basket of Lagos State, is beautifully endowed with dense mangroves, trails, hills, resort and ancient monuments. Recently, it is been recognised and referred to as the new horizon for tourism and investment in Lagos State.

Eepe town derived its name from Oko-Eepe in the 15th century and some historians believed Peeta, Uraka’s wife must have played a vital role in the naming of Epe Town. Epe started expanding and in no time, some people settled at Areke or Aleke while others settled at the other side known as “Apakeji”.

Epe is a Yoruba speaking town about 60 kilometers from Lagos, also a Local Government Area of Lagos State, with 294 rural and 24 semi-urban communities. At inception, while only a few families lived there, the town was called Oko Epe, meaning “the farm of black ants”.

2024年8月3日 · Today our spotlight hits the ancient town of Epe. Epe is located on the north side of the Lekki Lagoon, with close proximity to Ijebu Ode, a traditional settlement of the Ijebu people. By the mid 18th century, the coastal town had become a chief port for Ijebu-Ode for the transportation of slaves, cloth, and agricultural produce.
