Difference Between WGS84 and ETRS89
ETRS89 is constantly monitored and updated by the EUREF through its Permanent Network (EPN). While there are certainly similarities between the two, the scope covered by WGS84 is much wider. However, it can certainly be useful to know how ETRS89 works should one ever be in the European territories.

ETRS89
The European Terrestrial Reference System 89 (ETRS89) was adopted in 1990 in Firenze, Italy, following the EUREF Resolution 1 that states: "The IAG Subcommision for the European Reference Frame recommends that the system to be adopted by EUREF will be coincident with the ITRS at the epoch 1989.0 and fixed to the stable part of the Eurasian ...

Geodetic aspects of the ETRS89 | icgc
ETRS89 is a three-dimensional geodetic reference system, used as standard for highly accurate GPS georeferencing in Europe. It coincides with the ITRS in the ITRF89 1989.0 frame, which is equivalent to the ETRF89 frame, from where the ETRS89 system gets its name, and is based on the GRS80 reference ellipsoid.
1. Station positions & minimized velocities (ETRS89) – Case 1 is “easy” to implement – Case 2 & 3 are more sophisticated & need • Transformation formula (ETRS89) • Deformation model
ETRS89: Definition •Coincides with ITRS at epoch 1989.0: –Definition at a reference epoch (1989.0) –The 7 parameters between ITRS and ETRS89 are zero at 1989.0 •Fixed to the stable part of the Eurasian plate –Co-moving with the plate: law of time evolution –Time derivatives of the transformation parameters

Use ETRS89 / LCC for conformal mapping at 1:500,000 scale or smaller or ETRS89 / UTM for conformal mapping at scales larger than 1:500,000. Use formally limited to ETRS89 area of continental Europe but extended for pan-European analysis at small scales.
