The East Asia Summit (EAS) is a regional forum held annually by leaders of, initially, 16 countries in the East Asian, Southeast Asian, South Asian and Oceanian regions, based on the ASEAN Plus Six mechanism. Membership expanded to 18 countries including Russia and the United States at the Sixth EAS in 2011.

We reaffirmed the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific as well as ASEAN’s central role in the EAS and underscored ASEAN’s commitment to work in close partnership with all non-ASEAN EAS participating countries. We emphasised upholding the important role of the EAS in strengthening multilateralism and the international order based on international law.

EAS leaders discussed key regional issues including safe, affordable and equitable access to COVID-19 vaccines, health security, the South China Sea, the situations in Myanmar and Hong Kong, the Korean Peninsula, climate change, cybersecurity and countering violent extremism.
