The patient in question was Eben Byers, and he was so taken with a "miracle" tonic named Radithor that he dosed himself with it several times a day.

Eben Byers. In his youth Eben Byers had been the U.S. amateur golf champion. But at that point in his life that is of interest to us, he was president of the A.M. Byers Company in Pittsburg, one of the world's largest steel companies. In 1927 he injured his arm on a party train following a Harvard-Yale football game.
