Triage is a rapid evaluation process of patient acuity for the purpose of establishing the order and/or location in which the patient should be seen by an emergency physician, physician assistant (PA), or nurse practitioner (NP).

This protocol follows the PRISMA‐P statement and will include any type of study on strategies to improve the triage process in the ED (using recognized and validated triage scales). The included studies were examined for scientific quality using the Mixed Methods Appraisal Tool.

We assessed and compared the performance of the most commonly used triage systems for the prioritisation of high and low-urgency patients at the ED, compared with any reference standard that is a proxy of true patient urgency.
