Students may take an educational leave for personal, educational, financial, medical, or other reasons. If you need to take an educational leave, you’ll need to explain your reason(s) for the leave when you submit your request.

Educational Leave means full or partial absence from an employee’s ordinary job responsibilities either with full or partial pay or without pay, to attend a course of study at an educational institution or a course of study conducted by a reputable sponsor on behalf of an educational institution.

The period of a leave of absence granted under this section may not exceed two years, except that the period may exceed two years but may not exceed three years in the case of an eligible member pursuing a program of education in a health care profession.

Following permanent separation of six months or longer an employee who returns to state service in a position requiring teaching certification qualifications loses any unused portion of previously accrued educational leave.

An employee may request leave for certain educational courses. Leave with pay for short periods (one course) is available through the Educational Assistance Program.
