Actually Jon answer says only slightly more than this answer. The information it adds is that 1) Latin was used by educated people in all Europe (although linked by this answer), and 2) as such i.e. and e.g. were the abbreviations known and used.

2023年7月13日 · The use of full stops with eg and ie is certainly not mandatory, as a quick check online will show. Cambridge Dictionary and Collins, for instance, list both variants. The dropping of full stops seems more prevalent in the UK than in the US; it certainly avoids a lot of clutter (eg i.e.,). Rarely does it cause a lack of clarity. –

Instead use ‘for example’ or ‘such as’ or 'like' or ‘including’ - whichever works best in the specific context. ‘ie’ - used to clarify a sentence - isn’t always well understood. Try (re)writing sentences to avoid the need to use it.

2015年4月21日 · In a software manual I don't see how using e.g. like that (or even eg) is unacceptable (though I'd add appropriate commas). If e.g. is taken by the vast majority of people to mean "for example" there's no reason why it cannot be used in that sense even in your sentences. Understand that a slightly telegraphic style is usual in such documents.
