The biblical story of Abraham appears in Egypt by at least the third century BC, when the Hebrew Bible was translated into Greek during the reign of Ptolemy II. This translation is known as the Septuagint. Egyptian manuscripts of the Septuagint telling the biblical story of Abraham date as early as the firstcentury BC.

The Book of Abraham is about Abraham's early life, his travels to Canaan and Egypt, and his vision of the cosmos and its creation. The Latter-day Saints believe the work is divinely inspired scripture, published as part of the Pearl of Great Price since 1880.

Some have maintained that the heading to the Book of Abraham (“The writings of Abraham while he was in Egypt, called the Book of Abraham, written by his own hand, upon papyrus”) means that Abraham himself produced the writings on the papyrus that the Prophet Joseph had.

In fact, evidence survives today indicating that stories about Abraham were known to the ancient Egyptians as early as the time of the composition of the Joseph Smith Papyri (ca. 330–30 BC). The earliest documented appearance of the biblical story of Abraham in ancient Egypt dates to the third century BC.

One way of determining whether the Book of Abraham is a translation of an underlying Egyptian document or whether it was originally composed in English is to see if the text contains what might be called Egyptianisms, or literary and linguistic features of the Egyptian language.
