Ehrwald liegt am Fuß des Wettersteingebirges mit der 2962 m hohen Zugspitze, am Becken des Lermooser Moos, einer ehemaligen Sumpflandschaft. Die Loisach fließt am Ort vorbei. Der Name leitet sich möglicherweise vom althochdeutschen eriro oder erro wald ab, was „Anfang des Waldes“ bedeutet.
