The SD45 is a six-axle diesel-electric locomotive class built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between 1965 and 1971. It has an EMD 645E3 twenty-cylinder engine generating 3,600 hp (2,680 kW) on the same frame as the SD38, SD39, SD40, and SDP40.

2021年4月30日 · Erie Lackawanna (EL) acquired SD45s in two groups from Electro-Motive Division (EMD). The first order for 20 examples (3601–3620) came in mid-1967 with a second group of 14 (3621–3634) arriving about a year later in May 1968. The EL SD45-2 were purchased as a fast freight locomotive. These were the last new locomotives purchased by the EL. EL purchased these engine with larger than normal fuel tanks.

2018年10月9日 · In 1976, Conrail inherited thirteen 3,600hp SD45-2's from the Erie Lackawanna, which had purchased the units in 1972 and were the EL's last new locomotives before Conrail. The SD45-2 was an initial success; it was a complete improvement or upgrade as part of EMD’s “Dash 2” line; it had little to almost absolutely no flaws during the early stages of production and during the model’s official introduction. It was both popular and compatible with the original SD45 as well, with it’s large 20-cylinder engine.

2022年1月15日 · D&H and EL traded SD45s D&H 801-803 for EL U33Cs 3301-3303. The SD45s were not renumbered; the U33Cs were renumbered D&H 751-753. 2024年12月20日 · The SD45 was the most powerful and entered EMD's catalog in December, 1965 with the unveiling of Demonstrator #4351. The big locomotive was equipped with a 20-cylinder variant of the builder's new model 645E3 prime mover. To accommodate the larger power plant, engineers lengthened EMD's standard frame for its six-axle models by five feet.

2018年10月9日 · It's shortly after the Conrail start up as EL SD45-2 leads a freshly painted Conrail U23B. EL 3675 was built in July 1972 and in 1976 became CR 6660.
